The world’s smartest rugby ball will be in full show across Australia in 2022.
Created by Gilbert Rugby in partnership with Sportable, the smart ball offers instant 3D tracking and trajectories helping teams track and analyse performances.
The smart ball will allow for pinpoint accuracy, thanks to a microchip inside the ball and a series of beacons around the field, helping boost performances for players and coaches, with the new Gilbert to be used across the Super Rugby Pacific tournament.
The first match with the Gilbert x Sportable Smart Rugby Ball will be the Round 4 match between Melbourne Rebels and Brumbies at AAMI Park, with the Gilbert to be used in all 10 Australian derbies on the east coast across the remainder of the season.
Gilbert Rugby Australia/New Zealand Director Nick Gray believed the additional technology would be a game-changer for the sport.
“Gilbert is proud to be a part of this innovative step forward in World Rugby, with the Super Rugby Pacific series being the perfect place to activate the world’s smartest rugby ball,” Gray said.
“The ball has gone through rigorous testing ahead of the first match and we can’t wait to see it in action.
“Gilbert has been at the forefront of innovation since 1823, with the new Gilbert x Sportable Smart Rugby Ball, being the latest addition to the game.
"We can’t wait to see his technology in action in one of the world’s premier rugby competitions in Super Rugby Pacific this season."
